Using the Aussie Bloggers Blogroll in WordPress.com

Aussie Bloggers has a blogroll containing the blogs belonging to every member of the forum.

If you’re a bit like me and like supporting other Aussie bloggers who might not get much traffic, you might want to use the blogroll on your own blog. However… it’s a big pain in the neck to do manually.

While there isn’t a plugin available just yet, you can easily import the links if you’re using a wordpress.com (free, hosted by wordpress) blog. There are a couple of things to keep in mind, though.

  • The import will include ALL links, whether they’re duplicates of existing links or not.
  • This is not a dynamic list – you’ll get the current Aussie Blogger blogroll, and you’ll need to do updates manually (or periodically delete all links and re-import them).
  • You may wish to import the links into a new category (eg. Aussie Blogger Blogroll). But WordPress link categories aren’t particularly well-developed – you can’t easily move links from one category to another. So think about it beforehand!

Here are the instructions:

  1. Go to your admin area and click on Blogroll, then Import Links (or http://<yourblogname>.wordpress.com/wp-admin/link-import.php will take you straight there).
    Import Blogroll Screenshot
  2. Enter this link into the Specify an OPML URL field:

  3. Click on the Import OPML File button.
