Writing Children’s Stories

Half the writers I know seem to have plenty of time, but no ideas. Me? I have ridiculous numbers of ideas. Although that’s possibly because I wander off to a new fiction series about once a week!

Anyhow, I came up with an interesting concept on the train this morning. A children’s series about a time-travelling dachshund named Polly. But I soon found that writing specifically for young kids might be harder than I thought…

  1. What age group are you hoping to write for?

When I was writing fiction, my problem was I naturally write at a lower reading level. It’s almost embarrassing. I’d try to write adult stuff and it came out sounding much too immature.

Have you been reading a lot of children’s books? If not, that might help you get in the right mindset.

    Good luck to you!

  2. Lots of luck, you’ll find that writing as a child is easier than it sounds! Just don’t use too many two-dollar words! Keep writing!

  3. I have the ideas and not the time. I write in my head. Constantly. I forget when I have time to type up the words.
